FAQ

What is a consultation, and do I need one before starting therapy?
A consultation is a brief, no-obligation meeting to determine if therapy is the right fit. It provides an opportunity to ask questions, learn about the approach used in sessions, and discuss your needs before committing to ongoing therapy.
-
How do I prepare for my first session?
Honestly, just show up. If it's a virtual session, find a quiet private space where you can speak freely. Beyond that, come with an open mind and a willingness to be curious about yourself. Therapy works best when you're engaged in the process, and any between-session reflections or exercises we discuss are there to support that.
-
Is therapy confidential?
Yes, everything you share is confidential. There are a few legal exceptions worth knowing about. If there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or someone else, if there is reason to believe a child is being abused or neglected, or if a court order requires disclosure.
Any exceptions to confidentiality will always be discussed with you whenever possible.

What is the process for starting therapy?
The first step is to book a 15-minute consultation. This is an opportunity to determine whether the therapeutic relationship is a good fit. During this conversation, we will discuss what you are looking for in therapy, how support can be provided, and address any questions you may have.
If we decide to move forward, the first full session will focus on gaining a deeper understanding of your concerns and goals. Together, we will begin developing a personalized care plan, which may include identifying key areas of focus, setting therapeutic goals, and determining session frequency. Therapy is a collaborative process, and as your needs evolve, the approach will be adjusted to ensure it remains effective and meaningful.

How do I book a session, and what is your booking policy?
Sessions can be booked online through Jane App or you can email info@wovenwithincounselling.com
If you are a new client, it is recommended to start with a 15-minute consultation to discuss your needs before scheduling a full session.
Appointments are available by booking only. If you need to cancel or reschedule, at least 24 hours' notice is required to avoid a cancellation fee.
-
How much do sessions cost, and how does billing and insurance work?
Session fees are $150 for a 60-minute session and $200 for a 90-minute session. Payment is required at the time of each session, and an invoice will be issued following each appointment for submission to your insurance provider for reimbursement. Direct billing is not available at this time.
Coverage for counselling services provided by a Registered Social Worker (RSW) varies depending on your extended health benefits plan. It is recommended that you contact your insurance provider directly to confirm whether your plan includes coverage for counselling or psychotherapy services delivered by an RSW. Additionally, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) recognizes Social Work as a health profession, and counselling services provided by an RSW may be eligible to be claimed as a medical expense on your income tax return. RSW-provided clinical services are also GST-exempt in British Columbia.

How do I know if my therapist is the right fit for me?
Finding the right counsellor is an important part of meaningful progress in therapy. A strong therapeutic relationship is one in which you feel comfortable, heard, and respected, and where your values, beliefs, and experiences are honoured. If at any point the therapeutic relationship does not feel like the right fit, it is encouraged that you explore other options. Therapy is most effective when you feel safe, supported, and empowered, and there is no obligation to continue with a counsellor who does not feel like the right match.
-
How long does therapy typically take?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this. Some people come with a specific goal and find that a handful of sessions gives them what they need. Others are working through deeper or longer-standing patterns and benefit from ongoing support over months or longer. We will regularly check in on your progress and adjust the frequency and direction of our work together based on how you're feeling and what you're working toward.

What is the difference between a social worker and other counselling professionals?
In British Columbia, there are several regulated mental health professionals you may come across, including Registered Social Workers (RSW), Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCC), and Psychologists. The differences largely come down to educational background and training pathway, but all are qualified to provide therapy and counselling support. As a Registered Social Worker, my training is rooted in a holistic, person-centred approach that considers how relationships, environment, and lived experience shape mental health. What matters most in therapy is not the title — it's the fit, the relationship, and the work you do together.
